Istanbul, a city that bridges two continents (Asia and Europe), is a mesmerizing tapestry of history, culture, and modernity. As the former capital of three great empires—the Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman—Istanbul is steeped in rich heritage, evident in its awe-inspiring landmarks like the Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace, and the Blue Mosque. The city’s skyline, dotted with minarets and ancient domes, is a testament to its storied past.

Istanbul Technical University (ITU) Faculty of Mechanical Engineering is located in the heart of Istanbul, within the Gümüşsuyu Barracks built by Architect Sarkis Balyan during the Ottoman period from 1850 to 1862. It adopted the name ITU Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in 1944 and has since trained leading mechanical engineers who have made significant contributions to the country. The ITU Gümüşsuyu campus offers a stunning view of Istanbul and the Bosphorus from its central location on the slope leading from Taksim to Beşiktaş. Nearby are notable landmarks such as Dolmabahçe Palace, the Maritime Museum, the Military Museum, Beşiktaş and Kabataş piers, and Akaretler Hill, all within a short walking distance. The faculty’s Baroque-style curved staircase overlooking the Bosphorus, its historically unique library, and several nostalgic classrooms enhance its distinctive charm.
